ABOUT THE WORKS
Rooted in layered plywood, Verhelst’s wall sculptures grow out of a visual world he began shaping as a child one filled with playful, cartoon-like figures and imagined characters. As his practice evolved, he became increasingly fascinated by what might happen if that figurative universe broke apart, stretched, and reassembled itself in abstract form.
Today, his work explores that very transformation. Wild shapes, bold color clashes, and a deliberate touch of humor guide each piece as it emerges from the material. The result is a series of one-of-a-kind artworks that carry the energy of his early drawings while embracing the freedom of abstraction.
Through this fusion of craftsmanship, experimentation, and playfulness, he has developed a visual language that reflects his ongoing exploration of form, color, and imagination.
