Merijn Verhelst - contemporary artist

My work usually starts with a quick drawing, a strange shape or something that makes me laugh. I don't really work from concepts or fixed ideas. Things show up, or they don't.

Some days one drawing leads to another and everything seems to work. Other days my so-called talent is nowhere to be found.

I don't take much credit for any of it. I think my toilet deserves about as much credit as I do. If I couldn't go for a piss, I probably wouldn't be able to draw a straight line either.

When something gets me drawing, I follow it. A drawing appears, and sometimes that drawing ends up as a physical object, cut, painted and built by hand.
